Survey Research on Counseling Need of Parent in Play Therapy

Abstract
In this study, counseling needs of parents was surveyed to know their needs for counseling and to understand their psychological factors which should be considered during parent counseling along with play therapy for their children. Questionnaires, which were prepared by preliminary surveys related to counseling needs through a face-to-face talk with 26 mothers who are having parent counseling. A total of 168 parents were surveyed to complete the questionnaire and the data were analyzed using frequency and percentage. In terms of parent counseling environment, the preferred counseling time of the parents is 10¡­20 minutes, the preferred number of counseling is once a week, and the most preferred place for counseling is parent counseling room. Majority of the parents wanted the following contents are handled during parent counseling: check-ups of children¡¯s condition, tips for how to cope with children¡¯s problems, explanation on therapy procedure, and child-rearing techniques. Concerning the needs of parent counselor¡¯s conditions, the results showed that the parents preferred counselors who are in their 30~40s, completed a master¡¯s/doctor¡¯s degree, are married, have experience in raising children, have at least five years of experience, and have a certificate. The most overriding factors as counselors were their expertise, counseling experience, and personality of a counselor. Warm and considerate propensity were the most important, followed by stable and analytic, sympathetic, and meticulous and sincere propensity.
